Rainbow following a storm

Have you every had one of the holidays where it rained everyday and then as is often the way, on the day you plan to leave, the clouds clear, the sun peaks, and the rainbow formed – beautiful.

The Old Testament prophet Ezekiel knows this picture. In the final verse of chapter 1 he offers an ‘awesome’ description of God?

Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. When I saw it, I fell facedown, and I heard the voice of one speaking. (Ezek 1:28)

The visions Ezekiel receives in chapter 1 are confusing yet grand. Two things at least are clear. One – the voice of the Almighty was heard and could not be ignored. Two – the appearance of only the likeness of the Lord was extraordinary. Imagine the appearance of the Lord himself!

Have a read of this great prophet – set your ears, hearts and minds to Ezekiel and have a look at the stage that he sets. It is a big stage. Three questions for what follows:

  1. What is God going to say?
  2. Why is it important for us to listen?
  3. How are we going to respond?

His voice will be heard, we must not ignore, in fact we must fall down ready to listen.

Pray – that as you dive into this strange word, the clouds of confusion will clear, the Son will appear, the promises of God will be as sure as a rainbow after a flood, and on the last day we will see the Lord face to face.
